UNC track and field teams thrive in 3 separate meets

Sometimes good results happen when a group that is used to doing everything together does something apart.

That was exactly the case for the North Carolina track and field team, who faced its first weekend of competition apart as it hosted the Gene Anderson Invitational, traveled to New York for the Armory Collegiate Invitational and journeyed to Winston-Salem for the JDL Invitational.

UNC collected a total of six individual wins or top collegiate spots in its three weekend meets.

Freshman Sarah Howard and Redshirt senior Chris DiLorenzo got the ball rolling at home for North Carolina with wins in both the men’s and women’s shot put event. Howard threw for a season best of 15.54 meters (51 feet) and DiLorenzo had his best performance since returning from ACL surgery with a throw of 17.39 meters, or 57 feet.

“I was pretty happy,” DiLorenzo said about his performance this weekend. “It was really the first time since I came back from my injury that I really tried to push it and really tried to get good throw offs. I had a pretty good series, and I kind of built my way up to get a good throw.”

Sophomore A.J. Hicks also added to the stellar throwing performances with a victory in the men’s weight throw with a distance of nearly 60 feet.

“As a group overall we did well,” DiLorenzo said. “I don’t think being split up really affected us too much since we divide up at practice anyways, but when everyone is together you’re more team driven and team goal oriented. You miss that when you’re apart.”

At the Armory Collegiate Invitational, a meet dominated by running events, sophomore Elizabeth Whelan and senior Marisa Dobbins led the way with a one-two finish in the women’s college 800.

Several other runners finished strong with numerous top-five finishes.

Down the road in Winston-Salem, the third part of the team closed out a solid weekend for North Carolina with solid performances from junior Steve Magnuson to win the men’s mile and junior Isaac Presson with a sixth place finish in the men’s elite mile.

Separation isn’t always easy, but it worked in favor of North Carolina this weekend.
