Game Recap: UNC men's soccer ties Duke 0-0

The No. 6 North Carolina men’s soccer team and Duke played to a scoreless tie Friday night at Fetzer Field — UNC’s fifth conference draw in as many games.

The Tar Heels (3-1-5, 0-0-5 ACC) came out aggressively in the first half, creating a number of chances, but their efforts were never rewarded with a goal. For the game, UNC had 20 shots. Duke (4-4-3, 0-3-2) had just six.

The Blue Devils, especially goalkeeper Alex Long, suppressed several close chances from the Tar Heels, and both teams lacked the final touch in the opponents’ defensive third.

UNC midfielder Verneri Valimaa seemed to be the player most likely to break the tie, as UNC’s offensive engine for most of the game, but Long came up with a few game-saving stops.

With Friday’s tie, the Tar Heels are now 6-0-2 in their last eight meetings with Duke dating back to 2007, and have not lost to the Blue Devils at home since 1999.

UNC now has six total draws on the year, with seven of its nine games having gone into overtime.
