No. 3 UNC trails UConn 1-0 at half

NORFOLK — After an offensively lacking first half, the No. 3 North Carolina field hockey team trails Connecticut 1-0 in the semifinal game of the NCAA Championship.

UConn took the lead early after a penalty corner fewer than five minutes into the game. Marie Elana Bolles redirected a ball from the top of the circle past UNC keeper Sassi Ammer.

The Tar Heels had their fair share of chances though. They outshot the Huskies 6-4 in the half, and both teams recorded two penalty corners. UNC also got two 1-on-1 situations with the UConn goalie in the half, but the Huskies managed to recover and clear both attacks.

Of UNC’s six shots, three were on goal, and all were saved by the UConn goalie. Ammer recorded two saves on three shots on goal.

In the first semifinal game of the day, No. 4 Duke defeated No. 1 Maryland to advance to the championship game. The winner of UNC and UConn will face the Blue Devils Sunday.
