No. 4 seed UNC women's basketball trails No. 13 seed UT-Martin at halftime

At halftime of the North Carolina women's basketball team's first-round NCAA Tournament matchup, the fourth-seeded Tar Heels trail No. 13 seed Tennessee-Martin 35-22.

Sharpshooting and solid defense propelled an under-sized Skyhawks squad in the first half. UT-Martin shot 46 percent from the field while connecting on 6-of-13 shots from 3-point range.

UT-Martin senior guard Heather Butler, who entered the tournament ninth in the nation in scoring, leads all scorers on the afternoon with 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

The Tar Heels led for only 2 minutes and 51 seconds in the first half, shooting just 31 percent from the field led by nine points from sophomore forward Xylina McDaniel.

UNC leading scorer and espnW national freshman player of the year Diamond Deshields did not start against the Skyhawks. The freshman started 29 out of 32 games she played in this season for the Tar Heels.

UT-Martin capped off the first half on an 18-5 run.

The winner of the game will face No. 5 seed Michigan State Tuesday.
