Who has filed to run for local office so far?

Orange County opened its filing period for the November 2015 elections Monday. The filing period ends July 17. City Editor Claire Nielsen compiled a guide to candidates running for office so far in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Chapel Hill Mayor

Pam Hemminger: Hemminger has served as a commissioner on the Orange County Board of Commissioners. She also served on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education and on multiple Chapel Hill committees, including six years on the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Commission.

Mark Kleinschmidt: Kleinschmidt is the current mayor of Chapel Hill, a position he has held since 2009. Before that, he served on the Chapel Hill Town Council for two terms. Kleinschmidt is Chapel Hill's first openly gay mayor. He has also served as the president of the North Carolina chapter of American Civil Liberties Union.

Gary Kahn: In 2014, Khan ran to fill a seat of the Orange County Board of Commissioners for District 1. Khan ran as a republican candidate in that election, representing a minority in Orange County candidates, who have largely been Democrats over the years. Kahn also ran for a seat on the Chapel Hill Town Council in 2013.

Chapel Hill Town Council

Michael Parker: Parker is currently serving on the Chapel Hill Planning Commission and on the boards of the Friends of Downtown and the Carrboro Arts Center. He has also served as chairman of the town's Transportation Advisory Board and as co-chair of the Central West Steering Committee.

Paul M. Neebe: Neebe also ran for a seat on the Chapel Hill Town Council in 2013. He has served on the town's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board for several years. Neebe has lived in Chapel Hill since 1967. When he ran for the council seat in 2013, he told the Daily Tar Heel that bike and pedestrian safety would be one of his biggest priorities.

Carrboro Mayor

Lydia Lavelle: Lavelle is the current mayor of Carrboro. She was elected to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen in 2007 and again in 2011. In November 2013, she was elected as mayor. Lavelle is the board's liaison to Carrboro's Appearance Commission and is a member of the Metropolitan Mayors Coalition.

Carrboro Board of Aldermen

Michelle Johnson: Johnson is running for re-election to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen. She was first elected to the board in 2011. She has been appointed to town's Affordable Housing Task Force, Animal Control Board and Community Home Trust Board of Directors. She has also served on the Rogers Road Task Force.

Damon Seils: Seils is running for re-election to the Board of Aldermen. He was elected to the board for the first time in 2013. Seils is the board's liaison to the Planning Board, and before his election, he served as the chair of the Planning Board and the Orange County Human Relations Commission.

Bethany Chaney: Chaney is running for re-election to the Board of Aldermen. She was first elected in a special election in May 2014. Before being elected, Chaney served on the Carrboro Planning Board. She now serves on the Board of Aldermen's Affordable Housing Task Force and the Transit Partners Committee.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education

Annetta Streater: Streater is running for re-election to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education. She was last elected to a four-year term in 2011. At that time, Streater said she would make funding for school nurses and student nutrition programs a priority.

Rani Dasi: Rani Dasi is running for a seat on the Board of Education. Dasi also applied as a candidate to replace Mia Burroughs on the Board of Education in November 2014. The space was later filled by David Saussy.
