Banned Books Week: Lolita

Every day this week, the Chapel Hill Public Library will debut a trading card, designed by a local artist to feature a banned book, as a part of Banned Books Week. This week celebrates the freedom to read nationwide.

Monday's book is "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov.

Reason for banning: Nabokov's short novel has been banned in France, Argentina, New Zealand, England and South Africa for the sexual relationship between the 37-year-old narrator and his 12-year-old stepdaughter.

Artist: Kristen Pearson

Artist's Statement: I aimed to de-emphasize the notoriously precocious Lolita and focus instead on Humbert Humbert and his travels. My collage is made of ads from 1950s LIFE magazines, a nod to Lolita's pop culture habit.

You can pick up a copy of these trading cards at six locations on and around UNC's campus.

 • Chapel Hill Public Library
 • Flyleaf Books
 • Davis Library
 • Undergraduate Library
 • Sloan Art Library in Hanes Art Center
 • Park Library in Carroll Hall
 • Stone Center Library
 • SILS Library in Manning Hall
