Politics of the Board: Part 5

This is the fifth installment of a series chronicling the political activities of members of the UNC-system Board of Governors. Here are Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

Scott Lampe
Positions on the Board: Lampe is vice chairman of the Audit Committee and sits on the Budget and Finance Committee.
Connection to the System: Lampe earned his B.S. degree in accounting from Appalachian State University and sat on the Advisory Board for the Walker College of Business.
Term: 2013-2017
Political Activity: Lampe donated $2,000 to U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., for the 2014 election cycle. In 2012, he donated $1,500 to Gov. Pat McCrory’s campaign, $1,000 to Republican Karen Ray’s failed N.C. Senate campaign, $500 to N.C. Rep. Julia Howard, R-Davie, $500 to Herbert White’s campaign for N.C. House and $500 to Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Buncombe.

Steven Long
Positions on the Board: Long sits on the Educational and Planning Committee.
Connection to the System: Long earned his B.S. in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Term: 2013-2017
Political Activity: In 2012, Long donated $100 to Vote for Marriage North Carolina, which supported Amendment One to the state constitution to make make marriages between a man and woman the only legally recognized union. He also donated $500 to McCrory’s campaign, $100 to N.C. Rep. Marilyn Avila, R-Wake, and Sen. Chad Barefoot, R-Franklin.

Joan MacNeill
Positions on the Board: MacNeill is Vice Chairwoman of Budget and Finance Committee.
Connection to the System: MacNeill is former chairwoman of Western Carolina University’s Board of Trustees and of its Foundation Board.
Term: 2013-2017
Political Activity: In 2004, MacNeill donated $150 to former N.C. Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight. In 2008, MacNeil donated $2,500 to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign.

W.G. Champion Mitchell
Positions on the Board: Mitchell serves as Secretary of the Educational Planning, Policies, and Programs Committee and sits on the Public Affairs Committee.
Connection to the System: Mitchell received both his A.B. and J.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill and served as a lecturer at its Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Term: 2013-2017
Political Activity: Mitchell served on the President’s Policy Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations for Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. In 2012, Mitchell donated $23,518 to Republican candidates running for seats in the N.C. General Assembly, including $8.000 to both N.C House Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, and Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. Phil Berger, R-Guilford. He also donated $4,000 to McCrory’s campaign.

R. Doyle Parrish
Positions on the Board: Parrish sits on the Personnel and Tenure Committee and the Public Affairs Committee.
Connection to the System: Parrish earned his B.S. in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Term: 2013-2017
Political Activity: In 2012, Parrish donated $8,000 to McCrory, and $17,500 to members of the state legislature, including $6,000 to Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. Phil Berger, R-Guilford, $4,500 to House Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, $2,500 to Sen. Tamara Barringer, R-Wake, $2,000 Sen. Neal Hunt, R-Wake, $2,000 to Rep. Ruth Samuelson, R-Mecklenburg, and $500 to Rep. Rick Catlin, R-New Hanover.
