The McCormick Foundation is awarding the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication $5,000 to help raise awareness of the First Amendment.

UNC is one of six universities selected to receive McCormick grants to conduct programs in the next academic year as part of the national “1 for All” campaign’s Liberty Tree Initiative that brings thought-provoking First Amendment programs and speakers to university campuses nationwide.

The Liberty Tree Initiative is named after the elm tree that stood in Boston, Mass. and was a central meeting point for the founding fathers.

Carolina faculty, staff and students planted a Liberty Tree outside the journalism school during last year’s First Amendment Day.
