TO THE EDITOR:

We are writing to express our disagreement with the DTH editorial (“Break busts legitimate,” Aug. 31) that stated, “the break policy for housekeepers is reasonable and humane.”

We are even more disturbed that University officials have failed to condemn a policy that treats housekeepers like children, demanding that they ask permission from supervisors to sit down when needed.

Write-ups by supervisors, suspensions without pay, and disciplinary action including termination — for sitting down to rest outside of their legal breaks of 15 minutes twice a day and one hour for lunch — are a shameful legacy of the Jim Crow South.

The UNC-Chapel Hill chapter of the American Association of University Professors strongly opposes the UNC break policy as inhumane and unreasonably punitive of the least privileged of UNC workers.

We call on the most privileged of UNC workers — university administrator — to take immediate action to end this policy.

As someone that has worked in both fast food & retail, not being able to sit on the job is normal. Not sure why this is such an issue.

Great letter! Glad that AAUP is taking a stand on this.

I think stewie has said all that needs to be said. These two professors need to step down from the ivory tower, spend a week or two in the service industry, and stop insulting the Civil Rights Movement.

In dept bldngs, housekeepers have already cut down their work load by emptying office trash only once again & we just got notice that they are going to stop cleaning classrooms everyday. Other than the bathrooms, I’m not sure what they do for 8 hours … definitely not the floors.

Perhaps they sit bc there is no work to do?

Just so you know, there is not a law in NC that requires employers to give breaks. So actually, getting any breaks should be considered ‘reasonable and humane’ because they could certainly have it a lot worse. They should just be happy that get to take any breaks at all. And you’re upset that they are required to ask for a break? How many people have jobs where they can just go sit down whenever they want without their supervisor saying that it’s okay.

I’d hate to see how you would do working a middle or lower class job. To you, the demands would be absurd. But guess what – refuse to abide by them and you’re out of a job. That is the real world. Try to consider what it’s like to actually live in it.
