The servers operating Student Central were shut down Monday, in one of the final steps of the transfer from the old system to ConnectCarolina as the University’s online class registration tool.
But the key features not yet available on the new system have been preserved, even as Student Central servers were decommissioned.
University officials said the transition was seamless, with students continuing to be able to access grades and unofficial transcripts through a site operated by different servers.
The switch was made Friday, said Chris Derickson, assistant provost and University registrar.
“It has become pretty much a non-event,” Derickson said.
The servers were shut down because their maintenance contracts expired and they were not needed for another year because of the plans to switch systems, said Debra Beller, information communications specialist for ConnectCarolina.
But ConnectCarolina does not yet make unofficial transcripts available to students because the Office of the University Registrar is still verifying that these records were transferred correctly.
“They want to make sure it’s right when they turn it all on,” said Max Beckman-Harned, student government’s technology and web services committee co-chairman.
He added that the information — composed of more than 10 million grades collected since 1967 — is on ConnectCarolina but is hidden.
“The system knows (the grades),” he said. “We just can’t see them.”
Beller said the oldest grades are the hardest to verify, and are the ones delaying the process.
Grades will be available on ConnectCarolina in December, Derickson said.
He added that students trying to access Student Central are redirected to a new address, but it looks exactly the same.
Derickson said that, had the transition not been successful, it would have been very inconvenient for students, as registration begins today.
“That would have been a bad story,” he said.
For students, the verdict is still out on ConnectCarolina.
Ureigh Houston, a junior psychology and English major, said he will miss Student Central.
“I liked the old system because it was self-explanatory and simple,” he said. “The new one is more complicated.”
Katie Lyon, a sophomore psychology major, said she welcomed the decommissioning of Student Central.
“There isn’t really anything from the old one that I miss,” she said.
