One man was arrested and another fled early this morning after an armed robbery at Morrison Residence Hall, according to campus police reports.
Luther O. Allison, 24, of Hillsborough, was charged with armed robbery, assault by pointed gun and resisting arrest, said DPS spokesman Randy Young.
Young said police found no evidence of a weapon on Luther at the time of the arrest.
Officers could not confirm whether the other suspect, 26-year old Michael DeAngelo Williamson, had a gun as he fled on foot, Young said.
“My understanding is warrants have been sworn for that gentleman’s arrest,” said Randy Young, spokesman for DPS.
Young said that Alert Carolina did not notify the campus of the incident via text or siren because the officer could not confirm that the suspect was armed. Alert Carolina posted a summary of the incident on its website.
In reaction to the incident, residence hall officials posted signs asking students to lock their suites and not allow strangers into the residence hall.
Young said the two men were acquainted with students who allowed them into the residence hall. Young could not comment on the nature of the acquaintance between the suspects and the residents, saying it was under investigation.
“The situation last night was not specific to that warning because it was people who were acquainted with each other,” he said. “The suspects were allowed into the residence hall.”
On Feb. 22, Allison was convicted of resisting an officer, according to state records.
Williamson was convicted Feb. 15 on drug possession charges. He also has a history of trespassing and other drug convictions, along with a conviction in 2005 for assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill, according to state records.
Do you think fracking can be done safely?
Let me know when we allow guns on campus, please.
Here is an idea…next time send out an alert and say possible armed suspect on campus. It would be better to be safe than sorry or just wait until they hurt someone and then send it out. I think the first idea is better!
As someone who lives in Morrison, I find it completely ridiculous that the residence hall staff put up all these signs while keeping us in the dark about what actually happened. I didn’t come to college to be treated like a child.
@HEREISANIDEA: I thought exactly the same thing. Seriously, UNC? No alert at all? There was just a robbery, a suspect freaking ran away, and no alert? Wow… Solid job guys!
@Anonymous: Also support. That’s some elementary school hoopalah
This really degrades my faith in the Alert Carolina system. It’s like saying that these two people weren’t going to hurt anyone else just because they knew someone here, regardless of the fact that they robbed a suite at gunpoint! And then proceeded to run away, on campus, with a gun! Come on, let’s use some common sense.
This incident disgusts me. I see no reason why the university couldn’t have sent a one-line text message informing us that there MIGHT be a man on the lose with a weapon…However, I see plenty of reasons why we should be informing students of a major safety issue, or potential safety issue. What a failure of Alert Carolina. This is the exact reason why we all register our phone numbers and run these tests. Now, sirens would have probably been unnecessary…but a brief text message would have sufficed.
