Duke basketball ticket seekers receive glitch email

Students looking to score tickets to the Feb. 8 UNC-Duke basketball game rode an emotional roller coaster Wednesday night.

Due to a technical glitch with the online ticket lottery notification system, all students who entered the lottery, including those who won tickets, received an email saying they would not receive tickets, said Caitlin Goforth, president of the Carolina Athletic Association.

Senior Allison Stewart said she first felt confusion, not anger, after she got an email saying she did not win tickets.

Just 10 minutes earlier, Stewart had received a lottery-winning email, containing tickets to the game with her name on it.

“I was like, well, did I get it, did I not?” she said. “Should I even have this ticket?”

But Goforth said everyone received the second email, and that those who received both emails still have valid tickets.

“So basically the ‘no’ emails that everyone was discussing as far as getting two emails were sent to everyone,” she said. “For students who did receive the ‘yes’ emails also, they do have a ticket.”

After Goforth received complaints via Twitter and email, she said a third correction email was sent out to students who received both emails for clarification.

“We told them if they received a ticket, they’re fine,” she said.

Senior Martin Reed said he knew he couldn’t have won tickets to the game just to have them taken away minutes later.

“We put two and two together, figured it was a mess-up with the system, and that we got tickets.”

But the contradictory emails weren’t the only problem Goforth addressed. She received a separate complaint from a few seniors who didn’t receive tickets at all.

Goforth said those seniors probably did not realize that they might have qualified for their one-time “senior status” priority for the Duke lottery last year because of credit hours, and forgot to change it with the registrar.

Travis Hairfield, a junior who qualified for senior status by credit hours this year, said he didn’t know he used his status last year.

“In the email, it said, ‘Our records show you used senior-status for priority last year.’”

the last part of the article brings to light a big issue that the DTH as usual skims over. “Goforth said those seniors probably did not realize that they might have qualified for their one-time “senior status” priority for the Duke lottery last year because of credit hours, and forgot to change it with the registrar.”

I know you’re bad at your job, CAA president (thanks for killing block seating for no good reason again, that was really awesome too), but I got this schtick in my email saying I had not won Duke Tickets because I had used my senior status. Here’s the catch: I’m a junior who had no idea about this. It’s not my job to go see the registrar about getting Duke tickets, it’s your job to make the system work in a fair matter. I’m bitter about not getting a ticket, I know, but it’s frustrating as a student who has applied for 8 lotteries this year and gotten 1 ticket to not receive a Duke ticket because of your organization’s repeated incompetence. Think about it like this, somehow i got tickets last year as sophomore (may have been my “senior status”, who knows), now the year we’re great, I get frozen out because the system sucks. Now it appears that I won’t get a ticket my senior year when we’ll be decent/alright. The system needs some kind of seniority focus outside of guaranteed tickets for “seniors,” whether it be weighted lottery entries or what, but I’d like to get my fair value of tickets included in my athletic fee before I graduate and get a job and move away to far to come back for tickets….or be forced to cough up 10 grand for season tickets

@come on, follow your own advice. So much whining. Before sending out your ticket, the ticket office sent you an email saying that their records indicated that you were a senior, and that if this was incorrect information, you should contact the Registrar’s office to correct it. They’ve got an automated system, and they send out an email to cover people with situations like yours, but it’s ultimately your responsibility to decide which year you want to go. You chose to go last year, apparently in the hope that you would also be able to get a ticket this year. That’s not how it works. The system worked in a fair manner. You got to go to the game last year. And season tickets aren’t 10 grand per year.

Adding to breal’s comment… The athletic fee you pay doesn’t even begin to cover the real value of football and basketball admissions, never mind the rest of the sporting events you can attend for free. It also goes to pay for maintenance of upkeep of facilities on campus that aren’t covered by ticket revenues, like the golf course and Carmichael. You pay $275 a year. Face value of basketball and football tickets ranges from $35-$60 depending on the event.

@come on: Last year’s Duke game was a fantastic Tar Heel win! You should be happy you got to experience that in person, instead of crying that you don’t get to go for the second year in a row. Why don’t you take this next year to try and resolve your “senior status” situation with the registrar, CAA, whoever, instead of anonymously moaning on the DTH website?

I think the issue is that come on didn’t realize he was a senior last year, so didn’t have the option. Im a junior myself and got the you are a senior email but figured I’d rather get tickets this year than when I’m actually a senior.
