TO THE EDITOR:
Leaving the UNC hospital parking deck on Jan. 27, I stopped my vehicle to allow a woman to cross the road at a designated pedestrian crossing. Immediately, a hospital employee in a gold SUV used the left turn lane to cross in front of me and turn right, nearly hitting said pedestrian. This is not acceptable behavior for anyone, let alone someone who works at a hospital. Saving 15 seconds on your Friday commute home is not worth risking someone else’s life.

Do you think fracking can be done safely?
It’s a sign of the times:“Rush rush rush, screw everyone else, I gotta get home asap; no one will stop me in my SUV, sure I might hit a person, but it wont be my fault.” We live in a narcissist, self absorbed society but fortunately there are many people like Nathan, the writer, who actually cares about others.
NOTE: Not surprised it was an SUV. The drivers behind the wheel seem to think that they are God. They feel insulated, and safe; everyone, of course, will move over for them, because they must have something important to do…..much more important than what I have. Thanks for writing Nathan.
Another biased liberal article trying to bash the republicans trying to save this country. Why did you feel the need to point out it was an SUV? That’s discrimination based on political party. Where are your outcries when it’s one of your own kind? You liberals all seem to care about discrimination only so long as it coincides with your feelings of white guilt.
Truly. And, BTW drivers – pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks ACROSS CAMPUS.
Because most SUV owners are self absorbed jerks. The writer pointed out it was an SUV because of the common characteristics the drivers have: don’t care about wasting gas, nor the environment, nor other vehicles on the road, etc.
PS: I am far from liberal Sigh, and I have no guilt, neither does the writer.
i actually cannot figure out if your comment is a joke. what does driving an SUV have to do with political parties? other than obvious and baseless stereotypes.
sorry if i’m dumb and you really are kidding. but the last line does not sound like it.
and btw sven, many suvs actually get decent gas mileage. it can be a good choice for a family that does not want the hassle of a minivan. as for their being “self absorbed jerks,” again, massive stereotype.
I never mentioned nor do I care about political parties. Whats they big deal over stereotypes??? They exist for good reason; they don’t come out of the blue.
One more thing on SUVS: We once had a vehicle called the station wagon – family cars!! SUVs were bought by gullible, mindless people caught up in keeping up with the Jones….They don’t care about the internment, saving gas, conservation; they only care about themselves. The truth.
Added to that: At lights you cant see over them; you cant see around them, you can see under them – it is disgusting what narcissist animals our society has become. Thankfully, I drive a wagon, I watch for pedestrians, never fell for clever marketing. SUV were designed for the military and off road use; what don’t you get about that?
There are many reasons a person may need to drive an SUV. For example: if they routinely transport items that won’t fit in a car or wagon, routinely drive in areas that require 4-wheel drive, or need a vehicle that can tow a trailer to name a few. SUVs serve a practical purpose for many people and owning one does not make them evil or narcissistic.
yeah, for some people, but not half the freaking nation!! People in NYC, LA, Chapel Hill have them for city driving? Get real; look around, observe trends, and take notice what is at stake!
Think of it as job security for hospital workers.
wow Sven. it sounds like daily life makes you really angry.
NO. I have a passion for life. There are a few issues that rile me, and this is one of those. Trust me, I am known as easy going, relaxed, extreme athlete, but very opinionated.
I detest most of pop culture, and can’t figure out crazes such as SUVs, Starbucks, “26.2” bumper stickers (I’ve done 35 marathons), “proud parent of a….” and of course, texting/cells and driving. Thanks for your concern W. Cheers, S
@Sven, I hear you. I drive an SUV, but I don’t drive like a moron. Gas costs are pretty high, but it’s worth it to me, since I take it off-roading occasionally. I’ll readily admit to being self-absorbed, a jerk, and not caring about wasting gas. I’m the one paying for the gas, and honestly, I don’t feel that I owe anyone an explanation or apology for it. I care about the environment to the extent that most of the things that I really enjoy doing, such as fishing, shooting, and playing sports, are outside. Thus, I try not to mess it up too badly beyond the amount of gas that my Jeep drinks.
I think you’re missing the point, though. The SUV wasn’t created as a substitute for the station wagon; rather, its target demographic was a person like me, who likes the versatility and fun driving experience that SUVs offer, as well as the wagonesque storage room. In my eyes, it’s a station wagon with balls. I had the misfortune of having to temporarily drive a Honda station wagon a few years back, and switching back to it from my Jeep was the equivalent of what I think a dog must feel like after it gets neutered. I agree that there are plenty of moron SUV drivers out there; however, there are also a bunch of folks who obey the law and have an SUV out of personal preference. Likewise, there are plenty of idiot drivers in other types of cars, too. The “Fast and the Furious” wannabes are the ones that really irritate me personally, but to each his own.
With regard to the rest of your list, I hate Starbucks, I couldn’t run a marathon if someone was trying to run me down in my SUV but still hate the seemingly inevitable self-fluffing from runners, I dislike the fluffing of one’s own gene pool by way of “Proud parent of…” stickers, I think texting while driving leads to bad things, and I’m constantly on the phone while driving. All you have to do is hone in on catch words that people say while they’re talking so that you can get the gist of what they’re saying, and ignore everything else, so that you can maintain focus on the road. It’ll take you a long way.
You’re excused Breal; I understand sportsman, and obviously I don’t speak for all SUV drivers…..More directed towards soccer mom type, and pseudo-macho men.
Drive safe; it’s a madhouse out there.
