Gumby’s Pizza

Man cannot survive on Pokey Stix alone, and neither could Gumby’s.

The pizza restaurant at 306 W. Franklin St. has closed after spending 18 years at its Chapel Hill location.

Most widely known for its Pokey Stix — a pull-apart pizza with dipping sauce — the restaurant was a staple for many UNC students and alumni.

Signs posted on the building said the space had been taken over by the landlord, Jeff Boak.

Sabrina Jones, director of East Coast Operations of Zapolski Real Estate and property manager for 306 West Franklin, said they had had several problems with both the current and some of the former owners.

“I have fond memories of pokey stix,” she said. “I know the students will miss those.”

The owner of the Chapel Hill Gumby’s could not be reached for comment.
