Name: Evangeline Mee
Year: Senior
Hometown: Knoxville, TN
Major: Dramatic Arts and Folklore
I love how Evangeline’s outfit mixes so many textures but still looks put together. She is wearing a colorful Estate Sale scarf, Urban outfitters vest, a cardigan, boots from a PTA thrift store and shorts that she says she has had since high school. Evangeline said she does not keep up with trends or read magazines but gets inspiration from the sale rack.
As you can see from Evangeline’s outfit, her tip was to use texture in your outfits. Her outfit shows how you can mix many difference pieces of different textures and colors if you stay within the same color palette. She mixes tweed shorts with a knitted sweater and a light scarf. She also has different shades of brown and navy mixed with black and grey with a pop of color from the scarf. Many people might think that mixing this many textures colors would be difficult but Evangeline proves it really is not.
In the past few weeks, I have been seeing a lot of colored denim online and also on campus. Back in the fall after Fashion Week, many people predicted colored denim to be a trend in the spring and now it is everywhere.
Caitlin McGinnis, a senior Journalism major from Concord, is rocking the colored denim trend in her wine colored Seven for All Mankind jeans mixed with an army green coat and a colorful scarf. Some people might think that wearing colored pants limits your outfit, but Caitlin proves that it definitely does not. Colored denim is easy to wear if you mix it with neutrals and try to incorporate the color of the denim into one accessory, such as a printed scarf. Caitlin said she reads Vogue, Elle and many fashion blogs, including the amazing Man Repeller. Caitlin also said she loves pants in general — she owns a velvet pair and hopes to purchase some snakeskin ones in the future.
Name: Grace Farson
Year: Freshman
Major: Photojournalism and Food Studies
Hometown: Davidson
Grace loves to incorporate different patterns and textures into her style. Grace said her look is inspired by her frequent travels to Asia and styles from the 1950s and 60s. She loves the current trends of elbow patches, sweaters and layering, but hates the campus trends of university shirts. Grace’s favorite places to shop are Goodwill and The Salvation Army.
While most of Grace’s outfit is in the same color palette, she keeps her outfit interesting by introducing a variety of textures and proportions. Her champagne-colored lace dress adds elegant texture, while her beige-and-white striped cardigan makes her outfit more casual and introduces a classic pattern. Grey ribbed tights give the outfit more texture and a cozy feel, as does her infinity scarf. A fur vest creates interest with bold texture and has a contrasting proportion to the rest of her outfit. Her brown boots give the outfit some rustic polish and her socks provide a nice pop of pink.
Name: Amy Anderson
Year: Senior
Major: Classics and Archeology
Hometown: Charlotte
Amy is wearing: Shoes from PTA, tights given to her by her grandma, a skirt from Urban Outfitters, a turtle neck and plaid shirt from Goodwill and a jacket she bought in Paris.
Amy describes her style as New Romantic inspired by London in the ’80s, and her style icons include musicians Siouxsie and the Banshees and Allison Mosshart. Amy takes an interesting approach to fashion — she takes her style inspiration from characters that she imagines. She said she sees fashion as a form of playing dress up and a way to take a few minutes to creatively express herself. Amy’s favorite places to shop include Goodwill, vintage stores and thrift stores. Amy said she likes seeing people wear Doc Martens, knit scarves and sweaters, chartreuse, ’70s upholstery-style prints, leopard, and vintage pieces.
Name: Maggie Owens
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Durham
Major: Linguistics
Maggie’s outfit was the perfect ensemble for today’s perfect weather. When it is January and it is in the 60s but there is still a chill in the wind, it is difficult to figure out what to wear. Maggie’s patterned sweater from Goodwill paired with J. Crew cords and oxfords and a thrifted belt are just warm enough for the weather without being hot with the unseasonable temperatures. I love the mix of colors and textures in the striped chunky sweater and wine colored cords. Maggie’s outfit could honestly transcend any season if you ask me, but she says she does follow trends. Colored pants are very in right now so her cords are on point as are her brown oxfords.

Name: Caroline Nagle
Year: Junior
Major: Global Studies and Hispanic Linguistics
Hometown: Raleigh
I saw Caroline in the Pit when the weather was slightly dreary but her outfit was everything but. I love the combination of colors and textures that she mixes to pull the outfit together. The leopard coat mixed with the green denim shorts and patterned tights is kind of unexpected. This is also a great example of how to wear denim shorts in the winter. Her coat and shoes are from Urban Outfitters and her top (which is actually a bodysuit) and shorts are from American Apparel.
Caroline said she gets her style inspiration from her friends, especially the ones in Saint Anthony Hall, and also from fashion blogs.

Name: Julia Cluceru
Year: Junior
Major: Chemistry and Math
Hometown: Stamford, Ct.
I saw Julia in the bookstore and her outfit was too perfect to pass up taking a picture of. The silhouette is very similar to what many people tend to wear around campus but instead of big sweatshirts and workout leggings, she is wearing an oversized sweater she said she got at a department store and textured leggings from Forever21.
The chunky gold necklace, from Madewell, and taupe boots from Aldo pull the outfit together to make it look nicer than just leggings and a sweater but still comfortable. My favorite part of interviewing Julia though was that she said her socks were her friend’s brother’s socks because it made me realize how effortless the outfit was.
