North Carolina redshirt sophomore A.J. Blue was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of driving while impaired and violating open container laws.

Blue was arrested in Burlington at 2:31 a.m. Sunday morning.

Team spokesman Kevin Best said Blue was the first to tell the UNC football coaching staff of the arrest. Best said the team will handle the matter internally.

Blue spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy before coming to UNC. In 2007 while at North Gaston High School, Blue was cited for resisting a public officer. That charged was later dismissed.

He entered the football program listed as an athlete and has spent time at the quarterback and running back positions. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2009 and did not record any stats this past season.

He joins two other Tar Heels who have had run-ins with law enforcement within the last year.

Linebacker Quan Sturdivant was cited for marijuana possession in July. Defensive lineman Jared McAdoo picked up a misdemeanor weapons charge when he had a BB gun on campus.

Both of those charges were later dropped.
