North Carolina never recovered from a slow offensive start in the second game of the day and lost to Xavier 10-4 Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.
Xavier flipped the switch much earlier in the second game than they did in the first contest of the doubleheader and took the early lead in the second inning.
Musketeer catcher Derek Hasenbeck doubled to left to bring home two runs and give Xavier it’s first lead of the day. In the fifth inning Xavier added three more runs to make the lead five.
At that point in the ball game, UNC had just one hit.
But the Tar Heels finally got to Xavier starter Jon Richard in the sixth inning and racked up three runs to cut into the deficit.
Jacob Stallings brought Tommy Coyle and Colin Moran across the plate with a double down the third base line. Freshman Michael Russell split the left and center fielders with a shot two batters later to score Stallings.
UNC added another run in the next inning but never caught back up to the Musketeers as Xavier scored two more runs in the top of the eighth to lead 7-4.
Adding insult to injury, the Musketeers tacked on three runs in the ninth.
Freshman Chris O’Brien was saddled with the loss as he went 4 and 1/3 innings giving up four runs on five hits, but he was just the first of nine Tar Heel pitchers in the game. None of them fared much better.
