With six runs in the first two innings, the North Carolina baseball team buried Xavier early on Friday in the opening game of the season.
The Tar Heels went on to add four more runs to defeat the Musketeers 10-2 in support of sophomore starter Kent Emanuel.
Emanuel (1-0) allowed just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work before giving way to Shane Taylor, Hobbs Johnson and Mason McCullough out of the bullpen. Xavier starter Vinny Nittoli (0-1) surrendered six runs in his four innings pitched.
The Tar Heels loaded the bases in the first inning before back-to-back hits by Jacob Stallings and Tom Zengel sent four runners across the plate. A two-run double by Cody Stubbs the next inning pushed the lead to six, and Tar Heels didn’t look back after that.
The game was the first of a doubleheader. In the next game, UNC freshman starter Chris O’Brien will take on Xavier junior Jon Richard in a battle of southpaws.
