Talking Taxes — quarter-cent sales tax reactions

A quarter-cent per dollar sales tax will reappear for voter approval on Orange County’s Nov. 8 ballot after failing to pass last year.

Tanya Tucker, who has lived in Chapel since June, hadn’t heard of the tax but said she supports the idea.
“I don’t think that amount’s going to be missed so if it’s about education then I’m all for it.”

 

Antonio Currie, who has lived in Carrboro for a year, said he hadn’t heard of the tax but supports the idea because of its intent.

“What it’s going towards — education and jobs,” he said.

 

Carlota Brown, who has lived in Chapel Hill for 8 years, had not heard of the tax. She said she supports the idea.

“Anything to help this economy and to help the children’s education,” she said.

 

Chris Smith, who has lived in Carrboro for two years, is a senior from Spartanburg, S.C. He didn’t initially know about the tax, but said he supports the idea.
“If you look at the state cutting back on the budget for everything, including education, some local governments are going to have to make up for it somehow,” he said.

 

Harsh Patel, who has worked at UNC School of Medicine for the last 5 years, hadn’t heard of the tax but said he supports the idea.

“If it’s going to be spent on a good reason, it’s worth the increase,” he said.

The tax would affect some retail goods and could bring in an estimated revenue of $2.3 million that would be split evenly between education funding and economic development.

Sareera Thompson, who declined to have her photo taken, has lived in Chapel Hill for about 14 years and said she opposes the tax.

“I need every penny I’m getting,” she said. “I don’t think it would be that much of an effect in a good way if they did do it.”

“he’she hadn’t heard of the tax but said he/she supports the idea.”

I don’t know If I find this hilarious or sad but every person pictured for this tax had no clue what it was about and probably didn’t know it’s the same tax that was voted down and is now being shoved back into people’s faces.
