APPLES, which stands for Assisting People in Planning Learning Experiences in Service, began in 1990 with the goal of increasing service-learning opportunities on campus. The first six service-learning courses were taught in spring 1991. Students voted early on to fund the program with a 90 cent fee. The fee was $10.30 for the 2010-11 school year.

APPLES offers a number of service-learning opportunities at the local, state, national and international levels. The group hosts alternative break trips in the spring and fall. The program has an student-led executive cabinet and projects are student-led as well. There are three full-time professionals and two part-time staff members.

This summer, a handful of UNC students will take part in APPLES fellowship programs to bring innovative ideas to communities. APPLES has four student-led fellowship programs, two funded directly through APPLES, and two by private donors and the Office of Undergraduate Research. “Our motto is ‘student leadership, staff supported’ Sarah Smith, a student services specialist at APPLES, said.
