Buckhorn Village was a planned mixed-use commercial development in the western half of Orange County at the southeast corner of Interstate 40 and Buckhorn Road. Plans for the development, which were approved in October 2008 by the Board of County Comissioners, include 1.14 million square footage of shopping, movie theatres and restaurants. The recession forced the development’s anchor tenant, Cabela, out of the project, and the project has stalled permanently.
The shopping center was described by its developers as a commercial hub for the Western edge of the Triangle, comparable to the Streets at South Point development in Durham. The site’s rural location and the potential traffic problems that would result from such a large development in a remote area led detractors to call Buckhorn Village another example of unnecessary suburban sprawl in the region.
