Topics: Carlyle Cup

UNC and Duke compete yearly to win the Carlyle Cup, a trophy awarded to the school that has the most combined head-to-head wins against the other school. The contest began in 2000, and UNC leads the series with six wins. The schools have tied once, during the 2006-07 year. Greensboro-based jeweler Carlyle & Co. sponsors the competition.

The schools compete in 23 varsity sports shared between the two programs and earn points for wins. Each school gets two points for the season series winner in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, with other sports earning one point. Post-season competition between the two teams counts toward their overall season wins. In ties, the previous year’s winner keeps the trophy until the next year.
