Topics: Carolina Hispanic Association

Founded in 1990, Chispa, the Carolina Hispanic Association, represents the UNC’s Latino community and promotes Hispanic culture. Started by Catherine Lindsey, a Colombian student at UNC, the organization currently has more than 70 members. Chispa is open to all students, Hispanic and non-Hispanic, and holds weekly meetings at 6 p.m.

Its dance group, Que Rico, and its younger dance group Dame Otra, preform at many of Chispa’s annual events, including Carnaval, a celebration of Latino culture. Besides dance group performances, Carnaval includes food, music and a performance by Ebony Readers/Onyx Theater.

Chispa also holds an annual event called Noche Latina, which promotes Latino culture through song and dance. Many other cultural groups attend this event in an effort to promote diversity in the UNC community. Chispa has been partnering with a task force to create a UNC Latino Center.
