The Carolina Inn was built in 1924 by alumnus John Hill and sits at the intersection of Columbia Street and Cameron Avenue. Hill donated the Inn to UNC in 1935 on the condition that any profit be donated to support the UNC Library’s North Carolina Collection. Destination Hotels and Resorts manages the Carolina Inn.
The Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of the prestigious National Trust’s Historic Hotels of America. During the summer and early fall, the Inn hosts Friday’s on the Front Porch, featuring music and drinks. The Inn hosts various conferences and meetings, including the Board of Trustees’ monthly meetings.
After an athletic director search committee meeting held Monday at the Carolina Inn, chairman Lowry Caudill said the committee is far along in the process of finding North Carolina’s next athletic director and has reached the stage of follow-up interviews with potential candidates.
The Carolina Inn is searching for a new general manager after its long-time manager, Creston Woods, departed on Jan. 12. Woods, who oversaw the hotel’s operations for 13 years, said his parting ways with the Carolina Inn was a mutual decision.
