The Forest Theatre is a large outdoor amphitheater on the eastern edge of UNC’s campus. The theater is connected to Battle Park and is located on a sloping hill near the Center for Dramatic Art.
In 1916, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, UNC put on a dramatic production in the theater. A few years later, the spot was established as a permanent theater area. Work continued on the theater in 1940 as part of the Works Projects Administration, and again in 1948 to add further improvements.
Originally the PlayMakers performed at Forest Theatre, but the theatre has come to host a variety of functions from performances to events and even weddings. The theater is now under the stewardship of the North Carolina Botanical Gardens.
