The North Carolina men’s golf team came in to this week’s Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Dublin, Ohio, ranked 12th in a talented 12-team field. And if not for a final-round collapse by Texas Tech, the Tar Heels would have finished in 12th place.

With an opportunity to play in its own backyard, the North Carolina women’s golf team capped off a successful run in the Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday, finishing in fourth place out of a field of 18 with a score of two under par.

Duke’s men’s golf team made the game look easy at last weekend’s Rod Myers Intercollegiate, as they finished the event as the only team under par.

The event in Awendaw, S.C., was not the first event of the spring season for the men’s golf team. But after day one at Bulls Bay, it sure looked like the Tar Heels’ first rodeo. The top four scorers on day one put together a score of 306, 22-over-par, and found themselves tied with College of Charleston for last place.

Led by juniors Catherine O’Donnell and Allie White, the No. 14 North Carolina women’s golf team took third place in the Bryan National Collegiate this weekend in Browns Summit. O’Donnell and White both carded 7-over-par for the three-round event, putting them tied for fifth overall.

Led by McGowan, the North Carolina men’s golf team dominated the field at the sixth-annual UNC-Greensboro Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, breaking a tournament record by finishing at 31 under par. No. 8 Auburn finished second, coming in seven shots behind the Tar Heels.

During the final round of the Tar Heel Invitational, a three-day, 54-hole event, the UNC women’s golf team managed to shoot 288, putting them at 2-over-par for the weekend.

The North Carolina women’s golf team won last week’s Cougar Classic the day after “The Social Network” debuted at the Student Union. Coincidentally, the last time the Tar Heels managed a tournament win, Facebook was just a month-old experiment at Harvard University.

With a veteran core returning, the UNC golf team is poised for a long-awaited breakout season.

Rising UNC junior Catherine O’Donnell won the gold medal at the World University Golf Championship in Antequera, Spain on Saturday.

The North Carolina women’s golf team finished in a tie for fifth place in the ACC Championships this weekend, led by senior Kate Thomas’ sixth-place individual finish.

The Tar Heels’ stroke total for the tournament was 906, and Thomas was the only UNC player to place in the top ten.
