Topics: Karen Gil

Karen Gil was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in May 2009. Before being named Dean, Gil served as senior associate dean for social sciences and international programs, senior associate dean for undergraduate education and chairwoman of the department of psychology. Her research focused on health psychology, acute and chronic pain, stress and coping, and childhood illness.

Gil leads the College of Arts and Sciences, the school’s largest academic unit with more than 700 faculty members. The college includes 42 academic departments and interdisciplinary curriculums. The majority of undergraduate students and about 20 percent of all graduate students receive their degrees from the College. All undergraduate students spend their first two years in the College fulfilling general education requirements.

In the past five years, five different people have held the position. Before being selected chancellor, Holden Thorp served as dean of the college. Before him, former Provost Bernadette Gray-Little held the job. She promoted to provost four years ago and selected as chancellor of the University of Kansas during summer 2009.
