Lydia Lavelle has been a member of Carrboro’s Board of Aldermen since 2007. She was the first lesbian elected to a municipal position in Orange County, and the seventh openly gay official in North Carolina. Before, Lavelle directed the city of Durham’s recreation department and served as chairwoman of the New Horizons Task Force. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and earned her master’s degree from North Carolina State University. Her term ends in 2011.
