North Carolina’s state legislature decides how much money the UNC system will receive through state funding. Budget cuts can be felt campuswide, as they typically result in faculty, staff, classes reductions and a decrease in incoming class size.

The General Assembly imposed a 5 percent budget cut on UNC-Chapel Hill in March 2009, worth about $29 million. The state faces a deficit of at least $2.4 billion for the 2011-12 fiscal year, and UNC schools have been told to prepare for cuts of at least 5 percent but possibly higher.
