The Rhodes Scholarship, named after Cecil Rhodes, is a prestigious international scholarship award for study at the University of Oxford.
Undergraduates may apply for the scholarship, which funds their education at the university for two years. Applicants are chosen based on: literary and scholastic attainments, energy to use one’s talents to the full, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness, fellowship, moral force of character and instinct to lead.
The scholarships are administered and awarded by the Rhodes Trust that was established in 1902. Scholarships were awarded starting in 1904, and there have been over 7,000 recipients thus far. As of 2011, a total of 47 UNC students have been named Rhodes Scholars since the award first was offered.
