Topics: Vinyl Records

Vinyl Records is UNC’s student-run record label. The label started as an extra-curricular activity, with about a dozen students gathering each week to discuss music. It formed in 2007 when co-founder Allen Mask became frustrated by college bands having to do too much business work instead focusing on their music.

Vinyl Records has since signed local artists like Lake Inferior, Apollo and Lafcadio. It provides recording equipment, management and other outlets for artists to take off.

In November 2008, co-founder Tripp Gobble won the BE Creative Entrepreneurship challenge in Austin, Texas, winning $5,000 and mentoring from industry leaders.

Vinyl Records traditionally records the music of student artists at the University. But Hamlet saw something different with Roberts and Hermann. When the two blues legends took the stage in Wilson Library last November, students Reed Turchi and Andrew Hamlet jumped at the chance to record them.
