Administrators could use The Daily Tar Heel as a means for communication with students, but recent fraud within a University department has created a barrier between all parties. MAY 23
A tempest in a teapot. That was how David Parker, embattled chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party, described the sexual harassment scandal that led to a meeting of the party’s state executive committee Saturday in Greensboro. Parker said publicly that he would resign at the meeting, following calls for withdrawal from party members and elected officials including Democratic gubernatorial candidate Walter Dalton. MAY 16
While the outcome of the May 8 election is a setback for both unmarried homosexual and heterosexual couples, the battle against Amendment One must rage on. And since many of the counties that voted against the amendment are home to colleges and universities, students and faculty at UNC and other institutions must continue to play an active role in making sure the amendment is repealed. Amendment One violates the 14th Amendment to the U.S. MAY 16

The Association of Student Governments has new leadership but looks to be up to the same old tricks. After two years of leadership under President Atul Bhula, the association elected Western Carolina University’s Cameron Carswell and Alecia Page to lead the organization next year. APR 24
Few UNC students would intentionally support sweatshops. Unfortunately, many do so unknowingly when they patronize UNC Student Stores. APR 24
There was an upshot to Wednesday’s ill-fated attempt at cyberbullying (see thumbs-down to the left): the hilarity that unfolded on the Internet after a screenshot of the message went UNC-viral. If you are a student at UNC, you should vote against N.C. Amendment One. (More on this in a moment.)
If you plan to vote on May 8, you must register by today.
If you’ve lived in North Carolina for 30 days, are 18 years old and aren’t a convicted felon, you can register to vote in North Carolina.

Those in favor of N.C. Senate Bill 575 say it will streamline the UNC-system bureaucracy. By removing the usual protections afforded to government workers from UNC’s employees, proponents of the bill say it would allow for more “flexibility” and improve the operations of the state’s public universities. APR 15
For many students, one of the most exciting things about living off campus is finally being able to have their own pet. Some go to breeders to find their perfect pug and others head to the local PetSmart to fawn over the kittens behind the glass windows. APR 11
A poll posted on The Daily Tar Heel’s website in the weeks leading up to this year’s student body president election revealed that, more than anything else, an overwhelming majority of our readers wanted a leader who was a good public speaker. APR 10
