UNC smokes St. Francis (Pa.), 103-54

The North Carolina men’s basketball team hasn’t had seven players score in double figures in the same game since it pounded Manhattan in 1985. Sunday night, this year’s Tar Heels did the 1985-86 squad one better, as eight double-digit scorers helped the Tar Heels trounce St. Francis (Pa.) at the Smith Center, 103-54.

Senior Italee Lucas leads women's basketball past Iowa

North Carolina needed an answer. As their 20-point lead slowly dwindled to just two, the Tar Heels realized the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes weren’t going away easily. The slow, methodical comeback of the Hawkeyes had left the Tar Heels in a six-minute scoring drought and they needed something to bring them alive.

UNC soccer hopes to spare the drama against SMU

The North Carolina men’s soccer team can be confident of at least one thing entering its quarterfinal matchup with Southern Methodist University on Friday. If the game comes down to penalty kicks, recent history is on the Tar Heels’ side. UNC has won the first two games of the NCAA Tournament at the soccer charity stripe in 5-4 fashion.

Men's soccer team falls to Maryland in ACC finals

CARY — It was a valiant effort. Playing a man down for 55 minutes after senior Michael Farfan picked up a red card, the North Carolina men’s soccer team came as close to equalizing Maryland’s one-goal lead as they could. But it wasn’t in the cards Sunday as Maryland trumped the No. 4-seeded Tar Heels 1-0 in the finals of the ACC Tournament.

Running backs depth fuels Hokie attack

Virginia Tech has a surplus of a commodity desperately needed by the North Carolina football team this season: running backs. The Hokies have three healthy, dangerous tailbacks champing at the bit.

Rematch takes different dynamic at neutral site

CARY — North Carolina was not taking its matchup with rival N.C. State lightly. Not after the Wolfpack upset UNC in the ACC Tournament last season. Not after the Red and White gave the Tar Heels all they could handle in their September regular-season matchup.

UNC men's basketball team wins exhibition game despite poor performance from Barnes

It probably wasn’t what he had in mind for his first game in a North Carolina uniform. Barnes, the first freshman selected as an AP preseason All-American and seen by many as the face of this year’s UNC squad, had a horrific introduction in the Tar Heels’ 108-67 exhibition against visiting Barton College.

Tar Heels handle Barton College 108-67

North Carolina won its first exhibition game of the season 108-67 over visiting Barton College. The Tar Heels were anchored by a game-high 25 points from Tyler Zeller who dominated on defense and offense with his superior size.
The game was also the first for North Carolina’s three heralded freshmen.

North Carolina leads Barton 57-35 at halftime

North Carolina leads Barton College at halftime in the Tar Heels opening exhibition game. Tyler Zeller leads all UNC scorers with 14 points.
The Tar Heels got off to a slow start early on, but used a flurry of fast-break points and stifling defense to jump out to a convincing half-time lead.

Absence of Boyd leaves void

The turbulent atmosphere surrounding the North Carolina football team has given rise to a lot of questions. Amidst the injuries, academic probations and agent-related issues, one question has gone unanswered. What happened to Jheranie Boyd?

UNC moves past NIT year

Moral victories just won’t cut it anymore. Not for a school that has been to the Final Four 18 times. Not for a coach already enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Not for a rabid fanbase two years removed from a national championship. That was a lesson the players of the North Carolina men’s basketball team learned the hard way last year.

Paulus makes return to Chapel Hill

When Mike Paulus left the North Carolina football team last year, he didn’t just leave behind his friends and teammates. He left behind an identity and created a new one. Paulus, a quarterback at William & Mary, now goes by Michael and will get a chance to upend his friends and former coaches when the Tribe come to Chapel Hill on Saturday.

Backup players lead UNC men's soccer team in win against Virginia Tech

Carlos McCrary to Martin Murphy to Jordan Gafa probably wasn’t a scoring combination the North Carolina soccer coach thought much about when he was putting together strategy in August.

UNC fights South Carolina to 1-0 win

In a game where nothing seemed to be going right for UNC, Lovejoy’s goal was a welcome respite for a team that lacked any offensive spark. For more than 75 minutes, neither side was able to penetrate the opposing defense in a physical game that saw a combined nine cards handed to the teams.

UNC football shuts down ECU 42-17

Despite first half struggles, quarterback T.J. Yates and the offense found a rhythm and rode spectacular performances from running backs Shaun Draughn and Johnny White to a 42-17 victory.

North Carolina, ECU tied 14-14 at halftime

North Carolina is tied at 14 with the visiting East Carolina Pirates at halftime. ECU scored touchdowns on consecutive drives to go ahead of the Tar Heels but UNC’s Da’Norris Searcy intercepted a pass and rumbled 46 yards to even the score.
The Pirates opened the scoring by driving 75 yards down the field, capped off by a 13-yard pass from Dominique Davis to Lance Lewis. UNC answered with a 77 yard drive led by T.J. Yates that ended with a 25 yard touchdown catch to Jheranie Boyd. UNC had East Carolina reeling on the Pirates’ next possession, but a costly roughing the kicker penalty by Bruce Carter kept the ECU drive alive and the Pirates took advantage.

Dual-threat QB awaits Tar Heels

The numbers East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis has posted this year have been impressive. Through his first three starts, Davis has averaged 297 yards passing and three touchdowns per game while limiting his interceptions to just one per game.

UNC men's soccer team beats Maryland for first time since 2003

There are many clichés that apply to the North Carolina men’s soccer victory against Maryland on Friday.

Castro's toe-poke bests Blue Devils

DURHAM — The frustrations of the North Carolina men’s soccer team were obvious. For 78 minutes, the Tar Heels prodded and attacked a Duke team that seemed content to sit back and play for a draw. That’s when UNC freshman Bruno Castro solved the Blue Devils’ defensive puzzle, gathering a pass from striker Josh Rice and toe-poking the ball in the upper corner of the net.

Midfield strength shines for UNC

RALEIGH — The stands at N.C. State’s newly constructed Dail Soccer Field were so full that people were being turned away at the gate. Those not allowed in climbed four floors in the Reynolds Coliseum parking garage just to watch the home team battle against North Carolina. The fans were ready to watch an electric game between two rivals. But once the game started, there wasn’t much opportunity to stand and cheer — for either side.
