Political science professor George Rabinowitz died Friday from a heart attack in Trondheim, Norway at a bus stop. He was 67. Rabinowitz’s legacy spans more than 40 years of teaching political science classes at the University. He was most prominently known outside UNC for a theory about American political behavior that rejected the status quo.

Possible SBP candidates to be investigated by Board of Elections

Though they might face punishment by the Board of Elections for illegal campaigning, Student Body Secretary Ian Lee and junior Rick Ingram aren’t worried, they said. The board can levy fines or increases in the number of signatures they would be required to collect to become certified student body president candidates. But both possibilities would only be enforced if Lee or Ingram choose to run.

The Wilson Library Rare Book Collection celebrated Colombian author José María Vargas Vila’s 150th birthday Thursday with a lecture, as they launched a digital collection of his works. The lecture, “Vargas Vila: 150 Years of Clamorous Solitude,” was presented by UNC romance languages professor Juan Carlos González-Espitia. He read Vila’s works in his childhood and kept an interest in the author throughout his life. Espitia said that when he came to UNC, he immediately checked the libraries for Vila’s works.

'God in America' screening draws UNC students on First Amendment Day

Students of many different religions came to the Student Union on Thursday to celebrate and discuss their religious rights. They were drawn primarily by a preview of a new PBS documentary, “God In America,” as well as a student panel.

Fire extinguishers, trucks remind Polk Place passersby of safety awareness

Nothing was on fire, but Carolina blue fire trucks from the Chapel Hill Fire Department lined the sidewalk in Polk Place Thursday.

Stovetop cooking demonstrations and fire extinguisher lessons were only part of what students got when they stopped by the National Campus Fire Safety Fair. Carolina Dining Services and members of the Greek community at UNC also served up ice cream to students who passed through Polk Place between classes.
