Ragged suit coats, an artist’s personal journal and faint voices looping in the background tell an intimate story that photographs alone do not. “Corapeake,” a multimedia exhibit by artist Kendall Messick, is currently on display at the Robert and Sallie Brown Gallery in the Sonja Haynes Stone Center. Messick, based in New York City, chronicles the intimate stories of the aging residents of the town of Corapeake, N.C. in an exhibition focused on preserving the memories of those often forgotten. The Ackland Art Museum is expanding its boundaries with a store on Franklin Street, but it’s unknown when its doors will open. The future home of the store at 100 East Franklin St. was originally scheduled to open in November, but has since been delayed indefinitely. OCT 6

Artist Louis St. Lewis has painted with his own blood, sculpted with human bones and been kicked out of six art schools. His newest collection — free of blood — is featured at Franklin Street boutique Toots & Magoo this month. When modern medicine and words fall short, music can be a remedy that helps afflicted individuals both physically and emotionally.
Music therapists use music and music interventions to reach non-musical goals, such as improving physical, social, emotional and cognitive functions, said Elizabeth Fawcett, founder and director of the private practice Tar Heel Music Therapy.
As a music therapist, Fawcett is part of a growing field. There are about 130 certified professionals in North Carolina, and three universities in the state offer music therapy degrees.

A sea of green audience members experienced true Irish tradition in Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul’s performance in Memorial Hall on Wednesday night.
The group provided a lively show combining the mediums of music, dance and video to chronicle the diaspora of Irish immigrants during the great potato famine and their experiences up to the present time.
