  • Meat was stolen from a UNC fraternity house and then returned Wednesday, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Someone broke into the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at 112 Fraternity Court and removed $200 worth of meat. Damage of $200 to the house also was reported.
  • A Chapel Hill church was the victim of identity theft Wednesday, according to Chapel Hill police reports.

    Football - UNC opens season with win

    The North Carolina football team took a win in its first game of 2008, thanks in large part to a stunning performance by senior Brandon Tate. Tate finished with a school-record 397 all-purpose yards on only 11 touches. UNC beat McNeese State 35-27 in a game delayed almost two hours for weather. Despite climbing to an early 14-0 lead, the Tar Heels came back from the break without fire and fell to a third-quarter deficit, overcome in large part by Tate's explosiveness. Tate finished 106 yards rushing and 93 yards receiving, as well as an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown. AUG 6

    CHCCS expands language program to new schools For some students at McDougle Middle School, walking into a history class taught completely in Spanish is not as intimidating as it sounds. Because of increased interest in the program, the school board added dual language programs to Frank Porter Graham Elementary, Mary Scroggs Elementary and McDougle Middle this year.   • ?There were at least six incidents of breaking and entering reported Tuesday morning on Village Crossing Drive, according to Chapel Hill police reports. All six incidents involved a suspect breaking a car window, and in all but one a suspect stole electronics from the car, the reports state. A total of $2,407 worth of electronics were stolen from the cars, including five GPS units, an MP3 player and an iPod, according to the reports. A total of $1,700 of damage to the cars was reported.

    Vicky Cristina Barcelona 4 Stars Most of the buzz I heard surrounding "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" dealt with the prospect of seeing Scarlett Johansson and Penélope Cruz make out under the passionate red light of a dark room. That scene itself isn't worth all the fuss but the movie as a whole certainly is. Granted, it's just another Woody Allen tragicomedy about the self-affirming power of love. The crucial difference is that this time the love story is quadrangular. AUG 6

    Stereolab Chemical Chords pop 4 Stars Though George Harrison gets most of the street cred, it wouldn't be hard to argue that Paul McCartney is the underrated Beatle. Though overshadowed by the martyrdom of John Lennon, McCartney had greater mass appeal, blending bright '60s melodies with grand, orchestral instrumentation into one of the most successful and influential sounds of the '70s. On its new full-length, krautrocking Beatle-heads Stereolab mine the material of McCartney and his Wings with great success. AUG 6

  • An incident of breaking and entering and larceny from a vehicle was reported at 2:40 p.m. Monday at a parking lot on Highway 54 Bypass, according to Chapel Hill police reports. The Ford Focus was last secure at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to reports. Reports state that a stereo valued at $170 was removed from the unlocked vehicle, which belonged to a UNC student.
  • Personal items worth about $650 were reported stolen from a Meares Road residence Monday, according to police reports. AUG 6

  • Two people were arrested after police responded to an incident of assault with a deadly weapon at 2:46 p.m. Sunday at 414 Whitaker St., according to Chapel Hill police reports. Kecia Denise Roberson, 35, of 601 Bynum Court, was arrested for felony assault inflicting bodily injury. She was armed with a knife, reports state. Willie Glenn Stephens, 59, of Pittsboro, was charged with felony assault by strangulation, reports state. Police believe Roberson stabbed Stephens after he choked her during a fight, reports state. Minor injuries were reported. AUG 6

  • An incident of larceny and breaking and entering was reported at 5:16 p.m. Friday at 102 Fraternity Court, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Reports state that $4,100 worth of goods were stolen, including two IBM laptops and an Xbox 360. The building was unsecured when the property was removed, reports state.
  • Someone was found at 12:15 a.m. Saturday in possession of a large bag of marijuana at Granville Towers East, according to Chapel Hill police reports. AUG 6

    Basketball UNC's popular late-night event - and the public's first chance to see the North Carolina men's and women's basketball teams in action - has been pushed back a week to fit with Fall Break. Late Night With Roy will be held Oct. 24 in the Dean E. Smith Center following the 5 p.m. UNC volleyball game against Clemson. In the past several years, Late Night has taken place on the Friday closest to the start of team practice for the upcoming season. AUG 6
