Have safety or live in fear - you decide

During the summer, Congress, with the support of N.C. Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, voted to end debate on the comprehensive immigration bill, leaving the country without a functioning national immigration policy. In response, many towns have passed ordinances that attempt to make life so miserable or frightening for undocumented immigrants that they'll leave: English as the official language, declaring it unlawful to rent to an undocumented person, banning them from parks. Local authorities should be prepared for dirty bombs

Dirty bombs could cause quite a mess if one was actually detonated in the Triangle area. U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, D-N.C., wants to clean up this possible problem. The subcommittee of which Miller is a part is requesting that the government improve on what it sees as a lacking response strategy to a potential radioactive explosion in cities across the nation. N.C. needs to improve response to public records laws

Along with 38 other states, North Carolina is failing when it comes to public records access, ranking in the bottom quarter of states nationwide. North Carolina received 6.5 out of 16 points from an advocacy group investigating response time to records requests, cost of requests, appeals for denials and sanctions on agencies that illegally deny requests. Illegal file sharing violates ITS' acceptable use policy

When the Office of the Student Attorney General receives a report of a suspected violation from ITS, it is always the second time the student has violated the acceptable use policy. (0 Comments)

University needs to do more to eliminate spam

TO THE EDITOR: I've had enough with the spam that has been jammed into my UNC e-mail account. I always report each e-mail as spam, yet I still get repeated messages about how to have a great sex life or how to get the biggest penis ever. This amount of spam has increased since I began school, and I really want to know if UNC is even doing something to help the students' inboxes. (3 Comments)

Video about headquarters location mocks journalism

TO THE EDITOR: The continued focus on the location of John Edwards campaign headquarters is baffling ("Edwards camp reacts to video," Oct. 29). The report by Carla Babb is about as fair and balanced as a report from Fox News, one of the first "news" outlets to pick it up. (10 Comments)

Rock is 'classic' because it is worth listening to again

TO THE EDITOR: I was surprised to read "Who's to say what's 'classic': the radio, or the listeners," (Oct. 25). (Jamie) Williams presents the argument that the term "classic" was simply a label slapped on rock of the '60s and '70s by radio. He also suggest that given enough time bands like the Smashing Pumpkins could become under the umbrella of classic rock. (2 Comments)
