OWASA general manager receives statewide award
John Greene, general manager of operations for the Orange Water and Sewer Authority, received an award last week from the N.C. American Water Works Association.
The Raymond E. “Red” Ebert Award was created in 1988 and is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to operating water distribution or wastewater collection systems.
The award also recognizes organizational leadership, technical innovation and facility improvement.
Greene has worked at OWASA since 1981. He currently has responsibility for the utility’s overall operations and maintenance functions, including the main water and sewer systems, the Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant and OWASA’s reservoirs.
Whooping cough at local elementary school a rarity
A recent outbreak of whooping cough, which started among students that were not immunized at Estes Hills Elementary School, is a rarity in Chapel Hill.
“At this particular school, we have more students with religious exemptions from immunizations than any other schools,” said Stephanie Knott, spokeswoman for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
David Weber, assistant dean of UNC’s department of epidemiology, said it is the first outbreak in Chapel Hill he is aware of.
