Chapel Hill Town Hall to become energy-efficient
Crews will install a new energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning system at Chapel Hill Town Hall today.
The current system is 19 years old and has become difficult to maintain.
The project, which will take five months to complete, will replace two rooftop units with new energy efficient gas-fired units and a digital control system.
The Chapel Hill Town Council approved spending up to $666,500 for the project.
A portion of the project is being funded through the Town’s Energy Bank, a bond-supported revolving loan fund that promotes the installation of energy efficient equipment in Town-owned buildings.
Money saved on utilities is put back into the Energy Bank to fund similar projects in the future.
Saturday festival raises awareness of Bolin Creek
At Umstead Park on Saturday, children ran through the mud, fish net and bucket in hand, leaping into the creek’s clear waters as they took part in the fifth annual Bolin Creek Festival.
The free festival was sponsored by the Friends of Bolin Creek, a nonprofit organization based in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area that is committed to preserving the creek.
Dave Otto, chairman of the Friends of Bolin Creek, said the festival aimed to raise awareness about the creek and the beauty of nature.
The festival, which usually draws between 200 and 300 attendees, had a head count of about 500 this year because of its improved publicity, Otto said.

Firefighters use puppets to teach kids fire safety
In Orange County, puppets helped local firefighters and volunteers teach fire safety.
Volunteer puppeteers put on an educational show Sunday at the Chapel Hill Museum to kick off the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week.
The recurring performance will run at the museum on weekdays for the next few months.
“This has been a labor of love, and it’s a great way for us to reach out to the community,” said Matt Lawrence, Chapel Hill’s fire marshal and puppet performer.
“The main goal for us is to send a fire safety message to kids that is enjoyable rather than have us just preach to them.”
