The concept plan for the proposed Southern Village Center has been withdrawn by the applicant, officials said during Monday’s Chapel Hill Town Council meeting.

Mayor Kevin Foy said the proposal for Village Core — which includes a six-story hotel or multi-family condominium development — will be considered at a later meeting.

The Southern Village Center has received mixed reactions from Chapel Hill residents, some of whom are concerned about overdeveloping the surrounding neighborhood.

About 15 to 20 people have actively protested the proposed hotel that will replace an open-air parking lot in front of the Weaver Street Market. Currently more than 100 people have signed a petition against Village Core.

Developers say the hotel will promote economic growth in Southern Village. The council intended to discuss these plans and invite public comment during Monday’s meeting.

The discussions have not yet been rescheduled.
