Students at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville heard from a successful alumnus — UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp — on Monday.
Thorp spoke to about 400 students enrolled in the School of Global Studies at his alma mater as a capstone to his weeklong tour of education facilities throughout North Carolina.
Thorp said he was very impressed by the students he met, and marvelled at the growth of the school.
“When I went, the school had two foreign languages, and now they have a global studies program,” Thorp said. “We did not have students doing the kinds of things these students are doing.”
The School of Global Studies at Terry Sanford High School is a college preparation program that emphasizes a rigorous curriculum, high academic standards, community service and global engagement.
Program Director Sharyn Stevens said the program is designed to help students see issues locally and globally.
Thorp’s visit was a reminder of how successful Terry Sanford graduates can be, Stevens said.
“He’s such a positive representative of what Terry Sanford High School has always been about,” Stevens said.
Wanda McPhaul, assistant superintendent of communications and innovative projects for Cumberland County Schools, said Thorp’s visit was special to students in the school district.
“I think it’s a very powerful message for kids here that an alumnus has gone on to become the chancellor of a major university.”
Thorp also met with Fayetteville State University Chancellor James Anderson and shared knowledge of his hometown with the recently selected leader, who was appointed last spring.
“There are three rookie chancellors, and we have lots to talk about,” Thorp said. “I hope he’ll ask me for my help anytime he needs it because I really want him to be successful.”
Today was the last stop in Thorp’s tour of the state. He said the experience helped him connect with students.
“The reason I work in higher education is because I believe in the potential of young people,” he said.
“From this tour, I learned I need to experience that potential as frequently as possible so I can remember why we’re doing what we’re doing.”
