The University will allow students to camp out for tickets — indoors.
Under the new policy, fans of the Avett Brothers, Gym Class Heroes or other future CUAB-sponsored performers will be able to wait overnight for tickets in the Student Union, though tents remain prohibited.
The new Union concert ticket distribution policy is good news for fans of ticket sale campouts.
A successful compromise between safety concerns and a beloved student tradition has revived camping but also moved it indoors to the Student Union Great Hall.
Taking student preferences into account along with safety concerns reflects the University’s open-minded and realistic perspective.
The doors to the Great Hall will open at midnight, and wristbands will be distributed. Students will be allowed to bring blankets and sleeping bags inside the Great Hall to spend the night there.
This compromise brings structure and safety while still preserving the atmosphere of camping out for tickets to see a favorite performer.
Although a certain part of the experience is lost by bringing it indoors, recognizing camping out as a legitimate means to distribute tickets is the right move for Carolina Union officials.
This policy was not the easiest or cheapest for University officials to implement. DPS officers, security and Union officials will be present through the night, and students hoping to get in line will be allowed to remain in the Union after its usual closing time of 1 a.m. This will cost about $2,065 per event.
University officials’ willingness to enact such a policy despite the difficulties is laudable, and it reflects a willingness to listen to student concerns and embrace this popular tradition.
Fans waiting for CUAB concert tickets can look forward to much in the future: a preserved campout environment, a slightly more comfortable floor to sit on, and hey, perhaps some new friends.
