TO THE EDITOR:

As an avid Carolina Fever member it has been ingrained in my head that all fans should stand at UNC sporting events to show support.

This is the offense my girlfriend and I committed against the belligerent fans sitting behind us at Tuesday’s basketball game in section 209. The abuse began early in the first half, and escalated in the second half to the point where each and every time we stood up following a time out, countless explicative’s, moans and boos were thrown our way.

If a student is lucky enough to get tickets to a game, they need to either support our team to the best of their ability or not come at all. I was appalled that our students instead chose to sit and curse at fellow Tar Heels.

I've been going to games since 1990, both as a student and non-student. It's very simple: Students stand up, everyone else sits (other than rallies/exciting plays). It's really not that hard. I can't believe the students who have posted here who defend sitting down at a game. If you're a student and don't stand up you are less of a fan, plain and simple. If they had camp-outs or another system where you had to show your willingness to get a ticket you would see every student standing, guaranteed. If you want to sit, use your couch.

Again, real simple people, students stand at games.

If there were students directly behind him then they shouldn't even be allowed to go to a game. In my years at UNC (late 90's) I never saw any students sitting down. Seems like a crock to let these sorry students into the Dome.

I would venture to say you were the rude one, Mr. Pardue. Standing at the basketball games is acceptable if the large majority of fans in your section are standing as well. Otherwise, you are creating a visual obstruction to those behind you. You are lucky it was not me who was behind you, because you would have received a much firmer response to your inconsiderate actions than a few expletives. I have a suggestion for next time, maybe get your girlfriend to wear a nice g-string and hang it out a little for the enjoyment of those sitting directly behind you. I guarantee you won't get as many boos (of course, assuming your girl isn't shamu's human cousin.)

Don't diss your own fans, plain and simple. I'm not surprised that after getting booed at you chose to keep standing. I was in the same section standing the entire game. Luckily, I was in the last row so I couldn't block anybody, but that wouldn't have stopped me. (I was the guy that yelled at everybody for booing you two). The people who sat aren't less of Carolina fans because they sat, but they are less of fans for booing fellow dedicated fans. (That being said, you can grumble about fans leaving early, but chanting "games not over" is just stupid. It's not gonna change anything and it just makes you look like either elitists or whiny idiots.) Plus, everyone in that section was standing for the first half. Don't tell me that you were so tired that you couldn't stand for another 45 minutes.
