UNC should have place for N.C. State to get revenge

TO THE EDITOR:

In response to the article “Red spray paint mars UNC,” Nov. 21, I believe that it is very hypocritical of our campus to repeatedly paint the N.C. State Free Expression Tunnel without offering a legal alternative for State fans to “return the favor.”

If we have any respect for the integrity of our campus’s many historical landmarks (which State lacks) we should offer a location for our rival schools to communicate their hatred for our superior institution.

If UNC students want a free expression tunnel/wall, then fine. But in no way do I support creating some graffitti structure on OUR campus to appease State students (our campus is too pretty for that mess, anyway).

They can spray paint our bricks every year---it just reflects poorly on their fans.

The cubes aren't exactly open for anyone to paint. They are for registered organizations who pay for the privilege. Not an equivalent alternative. And while I don't necessarily care about the wants or needs of State students when it comes to graffiti, it would be nice to have an option that doesn't involve having to scrub paint off of our lovely campus.

NCSU didn't create the Free Expression Tunnel for the sole purpose of letting UNC students legally taunt their students. UNC has no obligation to create an analogous space just to appease the spray-paint happy among the NCSU student body.
