We've been waiting for it all year, and unexpectedly, it has arrived.
One day a year, staffers and editors at The Daily Tar Heel gather in the newsroom to cut a cake and sing happy birthday to the newspaper that has given all of us so much. It's time again to celebrate 123 years of award-winning, ass-kicking student journalism at The Daily Tar Heel.
A few people have asked me lately, so I've decided to clear up the confusion: The Daily Tar Heel includes it in its policies that all staffers — whether you're the editor-in-chief or a first-semester staffer — cannot sign student body president petitions. Even if a staffer doesn't cover student government on a regular basis, no petitions. It's been the rule since I was a first-year staffer myself.

On Saturday, the editors of The Daily Tar Heel gathered in a room to talk #goals. We listed what we were proud of from last semester and what we think we can do better. We talked about our own individual goals on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Those goals spanned all kinds of things — we want to meet our deadlines, interact more with staffers and better represent the DTH brand.

The last time North Carolina lost a regular-season football game, it was a 17-13 defeat to South Carolina on Sept. 3. Since then, UNC has clinched the ACC Coastal Division and will play Clemson for the ACC Championship on Saturday in Charlotte. Many fans are still asking, "How did we lose to South Carolina?" But while we fight to figure that out, we're celebrating UNC's 11-1 record and looking back on the 89 days that have passed since the Tar Heels' most recent loss.

In the interest of inclusivity, The Daily Tar Heel will from now on use gender-neutral language in its stories.

Our deadline for new staffer applications was 5 p.m. on Monday, and when the application was closed and I checked the final count, I found a record-setting year of applications.
