Every Friday and Saturday afternoon, a crowd of dejected students leaves Davis Library in search of their next study spot. On these days, Davis closes at 5 p.m. The Undergraduate Library also shuts its doors at 5 p.m. on Fridays, and is closed entirely on Saturdays.

Over the past several years, the internet has evolved from a platform you can visit (and subsequently leave) to a far more pervasive entity — one whose presence permeates every inch of our social fabric. Its reach is extensive, seeping into everything from contemporary friendship to political discourse. In theory, everyday people are now afforded access to more than ever before — more ideas, more information, more people. This holds true, but sometimes I cannot help but wonder if something intended to facilitate human connection is leaving us lonelier than ever.

1984 has been my favorite book since the grand ol’ times of AP English Literature in my senior year of high school. There’s something so haunting about the classic plot lines that literature lovers know all too well: a worshiped but clearly corrupt authority figure, mass propaganda glossing over the state of a broken country, a constituency that all but celebrates the demise of their humanity.

For centuries, people have been using fashion, decor, music or art as an outlet for their identity and self-expression. The things you wear and the hobbies you have reflect the way others see your personality. However, those who have elitist opinions about their identity harm this system.

Election day for poll workers begins before dawn at their designated polling precinct. For me, it was at 5:45 a.m. at a church a couple of minutes down the road from my house. Once the room is set up, pay sheets are signed, oaths are taken and it's time to wait until the polls open.
