I had a pretty rough first year of college, and it took me awhile to adjust to my new life here.
This afternoon, DTH editors met back in the office after a week of frantic texting, Slack messages and calling for story ideas and editing. If you had asked me two weeks ago if I wanted a week-long break from being in the office, I would’ve climbed to the closest rooftop and shouted “YES!”
My spring breaks have been largely uneventful. Typically, I go home and vegetate for a week, only leaving my house to make trips to Chick-Fil-A and take my dog on a walk.
I woke up today telling myself that I was going to do all of my homework. In just these few weeks of school alone, I've managed to get astronomically behind on my homework. Between regular DTH tasks, Silent Sam falling and Hurricane Florence coming to town, I've managed to nearly forget every assignment I've had.
When Chapel Hill had a short-lived water crisis in 2017, my roommate Maddy and I were in my car and on the way to her parents' house near Asheville within 30 minutes of learning the news. This storm was no different. Today, we packed up the Babe Mobile™ and drove to my grandparents' house without batting an eye.
I have a terrible time focusing on what’s happening directly in front of me. I always have. I started prepping to apply to college in 5th grade, I planned out my 10-year career plan when I was in 9th grade and I have an ideal place of where I’d like to be when I’m 40.
My dad and I have been fighting about who won the War of 1812 since I was in high school. I know that America lost the war, and he falsely believes that America "scraped by."
As a kid, I hated sports. I hated playing outside, I hated recess and I hated every gym class I ever had. In elementary school, I felt blessed every time there was a heat advisory because it meant that we could have indoor recess.
I had a meal plan for two years at UNC. Now, if I happen to go through the Pit during the 12:20 class change, I have flashbacks of spending 30 minutes doing rounds around Lenoir, desperately trying to find a table.
I’ve been on Twitter since 2012. When the advanced search feature on the platform was introduced a few months ago, I had an absolutely horrible time filing through all of things that I tweeted when I was 15 and deleting them. They were as terrible as you’d think they’d be.
For the past two summers, I’ve interned in the fashion industry. I feel really privileged to have had those opportunities, and really loved both of my experiences wholeheartedly. But without fail, every time I’ve told someone where I’ve worked, I’ve gotten the same response:
Happy Labor Day! To celebrate, I’ve spent the weekend eating my weight’s worth in food, watching Seinfeld and visiting my loved ones. What’s most important is that I’ve done nothing resembling work or productivity in at least 48 hours.
It’s been a long week. I feel like every single time I’ve seen one my friends, they’ve looked like they’ve just been through the entirety of Britney Spears’ 2007 in just this week alone.
For my junior prom, my friend Leah and I specifically learned the entirety of the “Thriller” dance just so we could request it to the DJ and embarrass our dates.
I’m going to say it. I think E.T. is one of the worst movies ever made. I am very scared of it, yes, but I know that it’s justified.
My mom graduated from UNC in 1988. Growing up, I heard about UNC like a utopia — the "Southern part of Heaven," the basketball capital of the world, the place that gave my mom the best years of her life.
About a week ago, 100 electric scooters made their way into Chapel Hill. Their parent company, Bird, didn’t tell the town or the University that they were coming in.
For my best friend Maddy's 20th birthday, we went to Washington D.C. to do two things: eat too much Shake Shack and visit every museum we could in a two-day period.
I listen to a lot of different music, but when I’m stressed, I always go through the same artists.
On Monday night, Confederate monument Silent Sam was pulled down by demonstrators in the first protest against the statue for the 2018-2019 school year. There seem to be millions of opinions surrounding the statue, and the debate has been at the forefront of conversation for most of my college career.
