Carmichael Arena

Carmichael Arena, home to North Carolina's women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, is one of the most well-known venues in college athletics. Previously known as Carmichael Auditorium, the arena was constructed in 1965 and housed the men's basketball team, including Michael Jordan's 1982 title-winning squad, until it moved to the Dean E. Smith Center midway through the 1985-1986 season. When the men’s basketball team played there, Carmichael was known as one of the loudest arenas in the country. The low roof in combination with a spirited student section made for a distinct home team advantage. It is named for William D. Carmichael, Jr., a former UNC vice president who died in 1961, and underwent a large-scale remodeling project in 2009.
