Strong individual performances led both the men’s and women’s North Carolina cross country teams to convincing wins against Gardner-Webb University and N.C. Central University in the UNC Invitational on Friday.

Cross country teams finish first in Boone

Peter Watson ushered in his second year as coach of the North Carolina cross country team with a first-place finish from UNC’s men and women at the annual Covered Bridge Open in Boone on Friday. Both the men’s and the women’s team placed three runners in the top ten.

No. 1 recruiting class boosts cross country

The women finished fifth at the ACC Championships and the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. The men finished sixth at both. But head coach Peter Watson is hoping to take the next step. With a men’s recruiting class named No. 1 in the country and an impressive six additions on the women’s side, the Tar Heels are on the right track.

Cross country falls just short of NCAA placing

The men’s and women’s cross country teams raced to the finish line at Saturday’s NCAA Southeast Regional only to hold their breath — not to catch it. Taking sixth and fifth places, respectively, North Carolina’s teams hoped to qualify for next week’s NCAA National Championships.

BLACKSBURG Va. — The North Carolina volleyball team extended its win streak to six Saturday night in Blacksburg Va. with a sweep of Virginia Tech (18-8 9-6 ACC) to improve to 17-9 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

Cross country team disappointed by eighth place finish

Cross country coach Michael Whittlesey wondered if confidence was the undoing of his men's team after a disappointing eighth-place finish Saturday in Chapel Hill. ""We felt like we were good" he said. And we forgot how we got there" which was really putting it to the race and not letting the race come to us.""

Individual times spark results

Imagine running a hilly 6K course in 20 minutes. Then imagine running that course with the clogged nose and sore throat of a sinus infection. Brie Felnagle managed to do both early Saturday and still finish third overall with a time of 20:23:00. Felnagle led the women's team to a sixth-place finish overall in the 2008 ACC cross country championships.

Tar Heels take on ACC's best

One legacy will begin after one legacy ends when the North Carolina cross country team hosts the ACC Championships on Saturday. Senior All-American Brie Felnagle will compete in her final cross country ACC Championship when the women take their places on the starting line Saturday morning. But Saturday will have a different feel for sophomore Evan Watchempino.

Men's cross country team finishes in front

Cross country might not seem like a team sport but try telling that to the North Carolina men's cross country squad. It was a controlled pace set by junior runner Zack Dawson accompanied by an excellent team effort that propelled the Tar Heels to a first-place finish this weekend at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone coach Michael Whittlesey said.

Cross country opens with win

Though Tropical Storm Hanna left its mark on the North Carolina cross country team's schedule the Tar Heels looked no worse for wear during their season opener this weekend. The teams were forced to abandon last week's scheduled opener at the Campbell Invitational due to the devastating potential of a surprise competitor — Mother Nature.
