Two UNC graduates make Forbes 30 under 30 Education list

Forbes is known for its lists -- the Forbes 500, the Forbes list of the World’s Most Powerful People and the Forbes 400. One can imagine the shock North Carolina Student Latinx Initiative’s co-directors Ricky Hurtado and Elaine Townsend Utin experienced when they found out from friends on Facebook that their work had earned them a spot on one of Forbes famed list -- Forbes 30 under 30 Education.

Q&A with UNC graduate and "Bob's Burgers" writer, Scott Jacobson

UNC graduate Scott Jacobson is a writer and co-executive producer of "Bob's Burgers." He also previously wrote for "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and has won six Emmys for his work in comedy writing.  Staff writer Eva Ellenburg spoke with Jacobson about his journey to success in the comedy writing industry.

Q&A with MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, UNC alum Nikole Hannah-Jones

UNC alum and The New York Times magazine writer, Nikole Hannah-Jones, was named a MacArthur Genius Grant fellow for her work and documentation on resegregation of the United States, particularly rooted in housing and education. Her work has received vast recognition, winning her a National Magazine, Peabody Award and George Polk Award.

The annual Tar Heel camp is canceled this year

The annual Tar Heel Camp has been canceled this year. The camp, hosted by the General Alumni Association, takes care of alumni’s children on the Friday and Saturday night of Homecoming weekend. The camp was canceled because only 12 people signed up, said Laura Sheppard, coordinator of Homecoming and affinity reunions. She said the camp usually averages about 20 children. - From staff and wire reports

Students grapple for prizes at GAA Homecoming event

More than 500 wrapped boxes stuffed with various prizes and UNC gear filled the Pit on Friday. For several hours, cheers from bystanders encouraged students to be aggressive and rip apart the boxes, one of which included a laptop. The General Alumni Association, which used money built into its budget to purchase the prizes, ran the event.

UNC alumni to reunite at Top of the Hill

Carolina graduates are expected to return in droves for the William and Mary football game Oct. 30. However, alumni are not coming home just for a football game. The General Alumni Association is hosting an Alumni Milestone Mixer at Top of the Hill’s new Back Bar on Oct. 29 from 8 to 10 p.m.

Alumni network to attract strongest students

Even years after they graduate, UNC’s alumni still play a vital role in bringing top students to campus.The General Alumni Association, primarily charged with providing a network of support for graduates, also plays an aggressive role in working with UNC’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions to recruit the nation’s best undergraduate students.

Alumni usher in new class of graduates

A few Tar Heels clad in caps and gowns on Sunday weren't seniors and weren't at Kenan Stadium to graduate. After a weekend spent celebrating their 50th reunion, the class of 1957 topped off their festivities by leading in the procession of graduating seniors.

GAA Prepares for Alumni

Students can expect to see plenty of alumni at parties and even in some classes trying to relive their UNC experiences during this year's Homecoming weekend.Alumni are already getting nostalgic by printing up their old class T-shirts and making plans for weekend poker games with old UNC buddies.

For many fans this Homecoming weekend, the game will be as much about nostalgia as victory.The General Alumni Association and alumni volunteers have made an effort this Homecoming weekend to get as many old Carolina hands as possible into the stands and the town.
